Keeping Your Debt in Check

Having debt is almost necessary for survival in our economy. However, how you handle that debt can make a huge difference. While there is such a thing as a healthy amount of debt, the definition is different for everyone.

Your debt should be just enough that you can make payments easily so that you build a credit score. If your debt gets to a point where you have difficulty just making monthly payments, you will find yourself in trouble with your lenders.

New Foreclosure Law

Recently, legislation was passed concerning the way foreclosure affects both creditors and debtors. The legislation imposed eligibility requirements for homeowners to qualify for certain protections.

One of the effects of this law would be that homeowners will have to have lived in the house for at least 6 months to qualify for protection against a deficiency judgement. The law has sparked several arguments, including one saying that bankruptcy filings will rise in response to it.

Mortgages Ltd Emerges from Bankruptcy

Mortgages Ltd has emerged from its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In addition, it has come out with a $20 million loan to allow it to continue operations as normal.

The bankruptcy has gone through a final reorganization plan and secured financing in the last two months. For many, this emergence comes as a surprise as the company was not expected to make it through.

Bashas Files for Bankruptcy

Bashas' Inc filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on July 12. The company owns 150 locations in Arizona, California and New Mexico and has 10,000 employees.

The company is planning to close down 10 stores, displacing about 1,000 jobs, by July 21. This comes after closing 5 stores and displacing 350 earlier in the year. However, Bashas executives are optimistic about the future of the company after bankruptcy.
