City of Stockton, Calif. may file for bankruptcy

The City of Stockton, California is currently deciding whether or not they will need to file for bankruptcy protection.

Stockton is located just 80 miles from San Francisco and has a population of nearly of 290,000. With this size, Stockton may be the largest municipality to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection, which is the equivalent to Chapter 11 protection.

The city has been struggling since the housing market began to decline ad the unemployment numbers skyrocketed. The city may enter the "nuetral evaluation process," the first step when a municipality is discussing bankruptcy.

 

Big Apple CEO given 'go-ahead' for sale by bankruptcy judge

Bill Johnson's Big Apple restaurant has been given the 'go-ahead' from a bankruptcy judge to sell five of their restaurant chains.

The restaruant was started 55 years ago but Bill and his wife, but the family-owned restaurant chain has now filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The couple's six children originally wanted to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy and sell the restuarants but, three weeks ago, a judge was presented with a plan for the restaurants to buyout.

Two of the children, along with outside investors, want to buy the restaurant from the other siblings. Officials said that the menu has been revamped and the overall 'mood' is better in the restaurants.

Man married to San Diego's BBB Chief files for bankruptcy protection

The entreprenuer married to a top official at the San Diego Better Business Bureau has now filed for bankruptcy protection.

The man has filed the paperwork in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Riverside and claimed debts up to $500,000 and assets of less than $50,000. The man's filing was not a business filing, but a personal filing. Many people have filed claims that the man owes them money.

His business ventures include a hot air ballooning company and a special effects company. The man allegedly collected money from many people through the years and promised to pay them back , but did not.

WaMu settles bankruptcy

Today, a judge at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware approved Washington Mutual Inc.'s exit from bankruptcy. The judge previously turned down two of the bank's exit plans.

The approved plan to exit Chapter 11 bankruptcy involves distributing more than $6.5 billion among the bank's creditors. In addition, shareholders should expect to receive recoveries. Debt holders could begin receiving payments from the bank as early as March 8. 

The only portion of WaMu to continue operations after exiting bankruptcy will be a mortgage reinsurance company. Shareholders will take ownership of the business valued at $140 million.

T-Boz files for bankrupty for third time, judge throws out case

A judge has recently tossed out T-Boz's( a former member of singing group, TLC) bankrupty case after she filed for the third time.

The singer has previously won multiple Grammy's for her singing group TLC, but the judge overseeing her most recent filing has now thrown out the case. The judge stated that he came to this decision after the singer did not do what she needed to do in order to get the ball rolling on the issue.

The bankruptcy law requires certain papework to be filed as well as payments and the singer has allegeldy failed to do either of these. T-Boz also did not attend a meeting with creditors or give a payment plan regarding her Mercedes-Benz.

Bankruptcy filings decrease in Phoenix area

The Phoenix area has currently had their lowest month of bankruptcy filings in two years with 1,321 filings in January 2011.

The state of Arizona logged 1,795 filings total, which is the lowest number, over a 30 percent decrease in filings since January 2009. Officials have stated that unemployment is one of the main reasons that people file for bankruptcy protection and the number of filings may be decreasing because the unemployment rate has fallen.

Nationally, the number of bankrupcty filings has also decreased. The most recent spike  in bankruptcy filings was seen in March 2010.
