Bankruptcy filings in Orange County see 16 percent decrease

The amount of bankruptcy filings in Orange County have decreased by nearly 16 percent from a year ago at this time and nearly a 12 percent decrease since August of this year.

Orange County saw a peak in bankruptcy filings in September 2010 when nearly 1,752 filings were made in court. In September 2011, there were 1,470 filings. This number is still high according to the lowest records, but it is lower compared to recent years.

In the past 12 months, the O.C. has seen a 2 percent increase in filings, but the nation has seen an 8 percent decrease. During the recession, California was hit the hardest but the drop in the real estate market and the unemployment rates. The state has the second highest unemployment rate in the country at 11.9 percent.
