Leigh Steinberg, former millionaire sports agent and the inspiration for the 1996 film "Jerry Maguire," filed for bankruptcy this week.
Steinberg was one of the most sucessful and powerful sports agents in the business. The 62 year-old used to represent football players Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, and Ben Roethlisberger along with boxer Oscar De La Hoya.
In a memo he sent to family, friends, and the media, Steinberg states that his battle with alcoholism caused him to slip into bankruptcy. He owes more than $1.4 million to an Irvine company, but says his attorney is currently totalling up all his debt. Steinberg is seeking Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection.
