More public employees eligible for chapter 7

by Administrator 24. June 2011 08:56

Public employees like police officers, firefighters, and teachers are finding themselves more likely to be eligible to file for chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Previously, many state and local government employees' salaries were too high to qualify.  One bankruptcy expert said of the trend, "Traditionally, public employees were not eligible for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy due to the fact that they had good salaries and typically didn't have to pay much toward their benefits ... In the current financial crisis, that is changing."

In an attempt to balance their budgets, many governments are making employees pay more for their benefits, work under wage freezes, and give back some of their salaries for deductions.  As a result, many more public employees are finding themselves needing to file for bankruptcy and choosing chapter 7.
