Southern Montana Electric Generation and Transmission Co-op files for bankruptcy

Southern Montana Electric Generation and Transmission Cooperative filed for bankruptcy last week in Butte, Montana. The company, made up of five cooperatives, supplies power to about 65,000 residents in Montana.

According to reports, the 20 largest creditors are owed a total of $19.5 million and the largest claim is $7.6 million. The company listed assets and debts amounting between $100 million to $500 million. The bankruptcy filing allegedly came after a board meeting occurred and multiple board members walked out of the meeting because of a disagreement. The attorney who filed the petition has not yet responded to questions on the claim.
